Kelvin Christiane has been leading his own bands for the past fifteen years and has released twelve CD’s of his originals and standards. A  graduate from the Leeds College of Music Kelvin has played with artists such as Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie, Pucho & the Latin Soul Bros, Jim Mullen, Gilad Atzmon, Alan Barnes. He performs regularly at the major festivals in the UK and Europe which has included Nice and  Montauban, France.

Alex Hutton studied Music at New York State University and then at the Guildhall School of Music in London. Works with UK’s elite players such as Peter King, Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen to name a few.

               19th    April       Steve Waterman    trumpet

 Steve has a remarkable recording career, spanning the past 20 years, and has worked with a great variety of jazz artists worldwide. Steve has his own quintet and in 2003 formed his 18-piece jazz orchestra playing his original competitions.
He is professor of Jazz Trumpet at The Royal Academy Of Music and Trinity College of Music in London and visiting Jazz Trumpet specialist at The Royal Northern College Of Music and The Royal Welsh College Of Music And Drama.


                 26th     April   Stan Sulzmann   saxophones and flute

Sulzmann’s career stretches back to the 60’s, when as part of a uniquely talented crop of British musicians, he played with Graham Collier, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, Gordon Beck, as well as leading many groups of his own.
Since that time Stan has been at the forefront of European contemporary jazz, and his talents have been sought by a host of discerning musicians, including Gil Evans, Mike Gibbs, Kenny Clarke/ Francy Boland and Michael Brecker. Constantly in demand as a guest soloist, he has appeared with bands across Europe, including the Hilversum Radio Orchestra, NDR Big Band (alongside Chet Baker), Hanover Radio Symphony Orchestra and the New York Composers Orchestra.


             3rd     May   Peter King     alto saxophone   (Admission £7 / £5 concessions)

“the finest alto saxophonist that Britain has ever prduced, and one of the finest in the world today” (Dave Gelly, 'The Giants of Jazz', Aurum Press, 1986).
Although he now concentrates on his work as a solo artist and with his regular Quartet, Peter has worked and with such legends as Bud Powell, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Milt Jackson, Lalo Schifrin, Frank Foster's ‘new' Count Basie Band and the Ray Charles Orchestra. He has also recorded with Hampton Hawes, Al Haig, Philly Joe Jones, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and many others, including Red Rodney, who said this of Peter.. “He's got that natural growl in his playing –yet he's soft and beautiful when he wants to be.” Peter has also worked with many great singers, such as Ernestine Anderson, Joe Williams, Anita O'Day, and made albums with Jon Hendricks and Jimmy Witherspoon.

                    10th May  Jim Mullen   guitar

Jim was winner of "Best Guitar" in theBritish Telecom Jazz Awards (1994 and 1996), "Best Guitar Awards 2000 and winner of "Best Guitar" in the Hamlet Cigar British Jazz Awards 2002."
In 1975 he met sax player Dick Morrissey and began a 15 year association which produced 7 albums and became one of Britain's top club bands. After the demise of Morrissey Mullen he worked with jazz vocalist Claire Martin (3 albums) and formed a series of quartets (3 albums). As a sideman he is in demand by visiting U.S. stars like Gene Harris, Mose Allison, Jimmy Smith, Weldon Irvine, Percy Sledge, Teddy Edwards, Plas Johnson, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Terry Callier.

                  17th    May       Janusz Carmello    trumpet

Janusz Carmello was winner of "most outstanding trumpet soloist”  in the Musicians Union BBC Big Band awards of 1989. Influenced by Clifford Brown and early Miles Davis,  Janusz appears regularly at the major European and British Jazz Festivals. He has worked alongside players such as Buddy Tate, Al Cohn, Teddy Edwards and Peter King.

                      24th    May       Mark Nightingale  trombone

Mark is one of the most respected and sought after International jazz trombonists as well as being one of busiest session-musicians on the London scene. He has worked and recorded for Sting, Tom Jones, The Spice Girls and Robbie Williams and played in the orchestras of Henry Mancini, Michel Legrand and Frank Sinatra. As well as leading his own quartet and Big Band, he can be currently heard with Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, Stan Tracey’s Octet, the Charlie Watts Ten-tet, the John Wilson Big Band, the Andy Panayi Quartet, various groups led by Alan Barnes, the Laurence Cottle Big Band and the Scott Hamilton Sextet.

                       31st    May       Bob Martin   alto saxophone

After his musical training in the USA Bob toured and recorded extensively with the Buddy Rich Orchestra and went on to perform with many of the greats, such Sarah Vaughan , Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Ekstine, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Sammy Davis Junior etc..

He has lived in London since 1997 and can be heard regularly playing alongside Peter King, Don Weller, Alan Barnes and many more of the UK’s finest jazz musicians.

                              7th    June       John Etheridge guitar

John enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and has been described by Pat Metheny as, "One of the best guitarists in the world". His range is well illustrated by his years of touring and recording with the iconic Stephane Grappelli while simultaneously doing likewise with the legendary jazz-fusion group, The Soft Machine. He has played with John Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzie Gillespie, Herb Ellis, Mundell Lowe, Nigel Kennedy, Pat Metheny, Birelli Lagrene, Barney Kessel, Vic Juris and countless others.

                      14th    June       Tony Kofi    alto saxophone

After a stint at the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston Mass USA, Tony studied with such musical luminaries as Andy Magee, Ernie Watts and Billy pierce, gaining invaluable experience that he then put to best use when back in the UK. From 1991, Tony was part of the UK's premier jazz group of the time – The Jazz Warriors. Tony’s recent projects include an album for Specific Jazz  which includes all his own original compositions and a album of Thelonius Monk compositions with Jonathan Gee, Ben Hazleton & Winston Clifford, with featured artist  Orphy Robinson.  

                                          21st    June       Bruce Adams    trumpet

In addition to being much in demand as a guest soloist across Europe, and co-leading the award-winning quintet with Alan Barnes. Bruce was also awarded the top trumpet prize at the British Jazz Awards 2000/2001, and is the current holder of the Marstons Pedigree jazz award prize of top British Jazz Trumpeter for 2006/2007.  The varied style of Bruce's work has led him to perform in the past with people such as Benny Carter, Al Cohn, Lanny Morgan, Herb Geller, Buddy Tate etc.. Bruce recently two quintet  albums with Alan Barnes. "Sidesteppin", and "let's Face The Music". Both Albums received rave reviews from the critcs and won C.D of the year awards at the British Jazz Awards.

 

                      28th    June       Gareth Lochrane    flutes

Performing on the flute, alto & bass flutes, Gareth has played with Bheki Mseleku’s  groups, Phil Donkin, Kate Williams, Gwilym Simcock, JTQ, and Incognito etc…as well as directing his own septet and “Best European Jazz group” award winning band ‘Grooveyard’.

                        5th    July       Alan Barnes    alto & baritone saxes

Twice winner of the BBC jazz award for best instrumentalist, Alan plays Alto and baritone saxophones and clarinet. Playing mostly carefully chosen standards his main criteria is that the music should swing like mad. He has played with Charlie Watts, Bryan Ferry and Bjork to name just a few and regularly appears in the Michael Parkinson big band.  He is also the boss of Woodville Records which have released some of the finest British jazz around .

                     12th    July       Chris Lamptey   guitar

Ghanaian born, Chris studied at Goldsmiths and Guildhall school of Music. He then went on to tour extensively with James Browns’ band,  ‘The JB’s ‘

with Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis. He works regularly with Osibisa, Black Egypt and other top World/ Jazz groups. As a top session player ‘…known for his authentic sense of rhythmic styles’ he has recorded with Courtney Pine, Sheila Ferguson, Andy Hamilton and the ‘Blue Notes’ amongst many others.

This is Lesley Christianes’  ‘not to be missed’  birthday party night at the Jazz Club .!!

Featuring  The World famous ‘Waddock’ Orchestra led by Willie Garnett ... The band features many top players from the London scene including Alex Garnett, Mike Coates, Dan Huston etc...  and will be playing arrangements by Sammy Nestico, Don Menza, Kenny Woodman, Frank Toms, Oliver Nelson, Kelvin Christiane, Benny Goodman plus many more..  

                      features the dulcet tones of  vocalist Lesley Christiane.

                                    26th July     Christiane Tobin      vocals

The last night of our Summer Season features Irish-born singer / songwriter Christine Tobin  the ‘Bjork of European jazz’  ..the Guardian. 

Christine was nominated for Best Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards. She performs regularly in the US with greats like the legendary drummer Billy Hart and is a familiar face at Ronnie Scott's, The Pizza Express Soho Jazz Club and the Jazz Café. Her earlier work includes stints in Django Bates' Delightful Precipice, Tim Garland's Lammas, and she has worked in bands alongside Julian Arguelles, Kenny Wheeler, Joe Locke, Clark Tracey, Gary Husband and Billy Childs amongst many others.
